Self-Portrait by Mary Grace at the Tate Britain.

SBA members enjoyed the official start to summer at our annual party on June 20th. The Fountain patio at the University Club was lovely, with the sun shining and a lovely breeze to keep us cool. During the evening there was much discussion about recent trips and upcoming travel plans.  I shared a story from my recent visit to London. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art has loaned a beautiful painting to the Tate Britain for an exhibition on women artists active in Britain from the Tudor court to just after the First World War. A self-portrait by Mary Grace (c. 1760s), donated to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in 1961 by local resident Lenore Adams, is featured prominently in the Tate exhibition, Women Artists in Britain, 1520 to 1920. Very little is known about the artist Mary Grace; amazingly the self-portrait is her only surviving painting. Santa Barbara Museum of Art Trustee Christine Holland and I received a tour of the show from Tate Curator Tabitha Barber and Assistant Curator, Tim Batchelor. It was a thrill to see Santa Barbara represented in such an important exhibition! Members of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art can read more about in our most recent newsletter.
